What is Recycled Polyester (rPET)?
Recycled polyester, or rPET, is polyester fiber made from recovered PET rather than virgin petroleum. Most rPET comes from mechanically recycled plastic bottles that are cleaned, chipped, melted, and re-spun into fiber. Chemically recycled rPET breaks PET back to monomers and rebuilds it. Either way the end fiber is PET, the same plastic as virgin polyester.

How is Recycled Polyester (rPET) made?
In mechanical recycling, collected PET is sorted, washed, shredded into flakes, melted, and extruded into filament. In chemical recycling, PET is depolymerized to its building blocks and re-polymerized. The recycled route avoids new fossil extraction for the feedstock but produces the identical polymer.
How does Recycled Polyester (rPET) perform?
Effectively the same as virgin polyester: strong, fast-drying, colorfast, and cheap, with a modestly lower carbon and fossil-extraction footprint. Mechanical recycling can slightly shorten polymer chains, so recyclers often blend in some virgin PET for quality. It carries all of polyester's downsides on persistence and microplastics.
So, is Recycled Polyester (rPET) plastic-free?
No. rPET is not plastic-free; it is recycled plastic. The recycled content is a real environmental improvement over virgin polyester and worth choosing when polyester is unavoidable, but it does not change the fiber's plastic nature. It still does not biodegrade and it still sheds microplastics. For a genuinely plastic-free garment, the fiber itself has to change.
