What is Polypropylene?
Polypropylene is a polyolefin plastic made by polymerizing propylene gas. In textiles it is called olefin. It is the lightest common textile fiber, does not absorb water at all, and is cheap, which makes it useful for wicking base layers, industrial textiles, and packaging.

How is Polypropylene made?
Propylene, a petroleum and natural-gas byproduct, is polymerized into polypropylene resin, melted, and extruded into filament or spun-bonded into nonwoven fabric. It is the same polymer used across rigid plastic packaging; nothing about it is plant-derived.
How does Polypropylene perform?
Extremely light, completely hydrophobic (so it wicks moisture away instead of absorbing it), quick-drying, and cheap. Its weaknesses are a low melting point (it cannot be tumble-dried hot or ironed), a tendency to hold odor, poor dye uptake, and, like all synthetics, microplastic shedding and no biodegradation.
So, is Polypropylene plastic-free?
