What is Microfiber?

How is Microfiber made?
Two synthetic polymers, usually polyester and nylon (polyamide), are extruded together and then split into extremely fine filaments, multiplying the surface area. That surface area is what makes microfiber grab dust and absorb water. It also means an unusually large number of tiny plastic strand ends, which is exactly why microfiber is one of the worst offenders for microplastic shedding.
How does Microfiber perform?
Excellent absorbency, dust and lint pickup, quick drying, and a soft suede-like hand, which is why it is everywhere from cleaning cloths to activewear linings. The environmental cost is the flip side of that fineness: microfiber releases more microplastic per wash than almost any other textile, because the same thinness that makes it work makes it fragment easily.
So, is Microfiber plastic-free?
No. Standard microfiber is plastic, specifically ultra-fine polyester and nylon, and it is among the heaviest microplastic shedders in the wardrobe precisely because the filaments are so fine. A handful of niche microfibers are made from cellulose and would be plastic-free, but if a product just says microfiber with no fiber content, assume it is synthetic. The fineness that makes it useful is what makes it shed.
