What makes a clothing manufacturer actually plastic-free?
The fiber, and nothing else. A manufacturer is plastic-free only when the fiber itself contains no petroleum polymer, which rules out polyester, nylon, polyamide, elastane, spandex, acrylic, and polypropylene no matter how the marketing dresses them up. Recycled polyester is still plastic. "Eco" and "vegan" finishes are often plastic. A recycled-content certificate proves recycling, not the absence of plastic. If you are going to put a plastic-free claim on your hangtag, the only thing that supports it is the regulated fiber-content label reading 100 percent of something that was grown, raised, or plant-derived.
This matters more at your size than at any other. A $20M to $500M brand is big enough that a plastic-free claim gets scrutinized by retailers, regulators, and increasingly by customers who read labels, and big enough that a claim you cannot substantiate becomes a greenwashing liability. The manufacturer's job is to make the claim true at the fiber level and provable in a lab, not to hand you a story. Is recycled polyester plastic-free?
No, and this is the single most common thing brands get wrong. Recycled polyester (rPET) is the same polyethylene terephthalate polymer as virgin polyester, spun from reclaimed bottles or textiles instead of fresh petroleum. It is a genuine improvement on virgin feedstock and waste, which is exactly why GRS certification exists to verify it, but GRS is a recycling claim, not a plastic-free claim. Recycled polyester still sheds microplastic fibers through wear, washing, and drying, and it still does not biodegrade. The same is true of recycled nylon (Econyl). If plastic-free is the goal, recycled synthetics move you sideways, not toward it.
Which fabrics can a plastic-free program actually use?
There are four honest routes, and each has a real trade-off. The comparison below is how we scope a plastic-free program with a brand, verdicts consistent with our 50-fiber materials glossary. No fabricated numbers; the performance column is qualitative because real performance depends on knit, weight, and finish, not the fiber name alone.

The gap that box exposes is stretch. Naturals and cellulosics cover most of a plastic-free line, but conventional stretch comes from elastane, which is plastic, so a leggings or swim program has no plastic-free path on the standard fiber menu. That gap is the entire reason OHZEHN-TEX exists.
Can you manufacture plastic-free clothing at production scale?
Yes, and the honest version of that answer has two halves. For naturals, regenerated cellulose, and blends of them, plastic-free at production scale is a sourcing and quality problem we already solve every day across our activewear, intimates, and basics programs. What that means operationally: you can run your conventional core and a plastic-free capsule with the same partner, the same quality system, and the same lab, instead of chasing a separate experimental supplier who has never held a retailer program.
Why does vertical integration matter for a plastic-free claim?
Because a plastic-free claim is a fiber-content claim, and a fiber-content claim is only as trustworthy as the manufacturer's control over the fiber. Ohzehn runs four factories in Fuzhou as one group, from fabric to finished garment, so the fiber composition on your spec is the fiber composition in your bulk, verified in our own lab per batch. A sewing-only factory buying fabric from a third-party mill cannot make that guarantee, because the one thing it does not control is the exact thing your claim depends on. How do you verify a plastic-free manufacturing claim?
Read the label, then verify the paper, then test the batch. Concretely:
- Fiber content, per style. The regulated content label is the claim. Any polyester, nylon, polyamide, elastane, spandex, acrylic, or polypropylene listed means plastic. Ask for the exact composition on every style, not a blanket brand statement.
- Certificate numbers, verified in the issuer's database. Organic content via GOTS or OCS, recycled content via GRS, and chemistry via OEKO-TEX all carry certificate numbers you can look up independently. A certificate you cannot verify is a logo, not a proof.
- A lab report on the production batch, not the sample. Fiber identification (AATCC 20 / 20A) confirms the actual composition of bulk, run in our PVH-accredited in-house lab and available for third-party verification through Bureau Veritas.
- PFAS and finishing chemistry. Plastic-free at the fiber level still needs a PFAS-free finish to be genuinely clean; our production is PFAS-free and documented, see the credentials page.
