What is Acetate?
Acetate is a cellulose ester: cellulose from wood or cotton linter is reacted with acetic acid and acetic anhydride to make a thermoplastic that can be spun into a smooth, glossy fiber. Unlike viscose, which regenerates pure cellulose, acetate chemically modifies the cellulose, which is why it behaves more like a bioplastic than a plain cellulosic.

How is Acetate made?
Cellulose pulp is acetylated with acetic anhydride and a catalyst to form cellulose acetate flake, dissolved in acetone, and dry-spun into filament. Triacetate is a more fully acetylated, more heat-stable version. The feedstock is plant cellulose, but the acetylation makes the end material a moldable thermoplastic.
How does Acetate perform?
Silky, lustrous, drapey, and cheaper than silk, which is why it dominates linings and formalwear. Its weaknesses are notable: weak when wet, heat-sensitive (it can melt or glaze under an iron), poor abrasion resistance, and prone to shine and creasing. It has no stretch.
