What is PTFE Membrane?
A PTFE membrane is a microporous plastic film used as the waterproof-breathable barrier inside performance outerwear. Expanded PTFE (ePTFE) is stretched into a film with billions of tiny pores that block liquid water but let vapor through. It is the technology behind Gore-Tex-style shells, and PTFE is a fluoropolymer, a member of the PFAS chemical family.

How is PTFE Membrane made?
PTFE is polymerized and then expanded into a thin, porous film, which is laminated between an outer face fabric and an inner lining to make a shell fabric. Historically the membrane and its accompanying water-repellent finish involved per- and polyfluorinated chemistry. Because of PFAS scrutiny, some makers have shifted to expanded polyethylene (ePE) membranes, which drop the fluorine but remain a plastic film.
How does PTFE Membrane perform?
Excellent, durable waterproofing with real breathability, which is why fluoropolymer membranes set the standard for technical shells for decades. The trade-offs are environmental and regulatory: PTFE does not biodegrade, sheds fluoropolymer particles, and belongs to the PFAS family now facing bans, and even the fluorine-free ePE replacements are still petroleum-based plastic laminates.
So, is PTFE Membrane plastic-free?
