What is Genuine Leather?
Leather is animal hide preserved by tanning so it will not rot. Chemically the hide is collagen, a protein, not a plastic. The two dominant tanning routes are vegetable tanning, using plant tannins, and chrome tanning, using chromium salts, which is faster and more common. What complicates the plastic question is not the hide but the finish applied on top of it.

How is Genuine Leather made?
Raw hides are cleaned, tanned, then finished. Finishing is where plastic enters: most commercial leather receives a surface coating of polyurethane, acrylic, or nitrocellulose for durability, color, and water resistance. Aniline leather is dyed through with minimal surface coating; pigmented and top-coated leather has a visible plastic film. Bonded leather is leather scraps glued and coated onto a plastic backing.
How does Genuine Leather perform?
Durable, repairable, breathable, and long-lived, which is a genuine sustainability argument for a well-made leather good. The trade-offs are weight, water sensitivity depending on finish, and the environmental load of chrome tanning. Vegetable-tanned, minimally finished leather ages beautifully and biodegrades; heavily coated leather lasts but leaves a plastic film behind.
So, is Genuine Leather plastic-free?

Is real leather more plastic-free than vegan leather?

Does leather biodegrade?
It depends on the tanning and finish. Vegetable-tanned, uncoated leather biodegrades slowly as a protein. Chrome-tanned and heavily coated leather resists decomposition because the chromium and the plastic topcoat interfere with breakdown. The finish that makes leather durable also makes it less biodegradable.
